So that’s what a blessing looks like!

Have you ever seen a blessing? I thought I saw one the other day at the mall and I am pretty sure that one flashed briefly on the TV. I know that God blesses people and I know that he has blessed me in the past. But right now it is all I can do to get through the day. I stay up after the kids are in bed so that I can pay the bills and catch up on housework. Then once I am in bed little gremlins with footy pajamas pester me for water and directions to the bathroom. You would think that after five years they would know where the bathroom light is and how to turn on the faucet. Work is demanding and by the time I get home I need to unwind. Instead, I am greeted with a thousand questions all of which involve choosing between spending money or facing a pre-teen tribunal. The car has been making a new noise this week. The investment account which is supposed to fund the kids’ college grows much slower than the kids it is supposed to support. I know who is responsible, their fingerprints are easy to identify. At least I have Saturday to catch my breath. Oh, I forgot, Saturday there is a soccer practice at 10AM and 2PM.

There is little doubt that children will keep you from getting a good nights sleep, turn every meal into a food fight, remove Saturday from your personal calendar, rob you of your retirement, expose you to countless germs, force you to relearn algebra, expose you to public embarrassment, barrage you with a steady stream of stress inducing requests, introduce you to people you would rather have avoided, and make you watch shows consisting of brightly colored animals engaging in plot less adventures. That’s what blessings look like. As I read through the Bible I am impressed with the number of times that children are mentioned as a blessing. The message comes through in different ways. Children are a way of keeping the family name alive. A son who rules on the throne is a way to know that God continues to keep the promise to David. Childless families pray for children. Children are a blessing from God. Psalm 127 states it this way: “Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.” This would apply to both sons and daughters, the message is the same. Children are a blessing. Where else can you enjoy the purity of love without an agenda? What other relationship is there when you are so needed and it isn’t pathological. Where else can you have such a positive impact on the life of another person? On the way to the soccer field or the principal’s office, remember children are a blessing. Whether you are making a deposit or a withdrawal from the ATM, children are a blessing. When you realize that ketchup is a vegetable, remember that children are a blessing. As you stare at the chocolate covered, nose running, clothes stained, dipper oozing person tugging on your white shirt. Remember, that’s what a blessing looks like.
