Session Details
Each Workshop consists of four 90 minute sessions which can be arranged to fit your needs.
Each session includes a mixture of lecture and discussion augmented with case examples and personal application exercises.
The workshop educates parents with biblical perspectives for parenting while providing a working knowledge of key psychological
concepts. With these tools parents will be able to develop their own personal parenting strategy which connects their big
picture goals to their day-to-day parenting decisions.
|
Session 1: "How do you define success?"
Session 1 challenges parents to approach their
parenting with a clear definition of what success looks like.
Parenting success involves knowing all of the areas that are critical to the development of a child prepared
to live an adult Christian life on their own.
Part of every successful parenting strategy is instilling a Christian worldview
and fostering emotional maturity. Having a compact definition of a Christian worldview allows parents to focus on attitudes and not just "do's" and "don'ts."
Raising children who are emotionally mature is critical to preparing them to
lead adult Christian lives. |
Session 2: "Transfer of Control"
Session 2 examines the developmental process of parenting.
Parenting begins with parents controlling all aspects of a child's life.
Parenting is not complete until the child is capable of controlling their own
life. In the New Testament Paul exhorts his mission churches to become
mature and able to discern for themselves.
From a psychological perspective, emotional maturity is governed by the degree
to which a child internalizes behavioral controls. Parents play a key role
in this process. This session will provide the basis for parents to develop a personal "Transfer of Control" plan as an element of their Parenting Strategy.
|
Session 3: "Behavior"
Session 3 focuses on behavior and behavior management.
Effective behavior management is critical to successful parenting. Children who learn to behave learn self control.
The session asserts that Christian attitudes are shaped by promoting Christian
behaviors.
The session will define the psychological concepts involved in eliminating
unwanted behaviors and reinforcing desired ones.
By the end of the session, parents will be prepared to develop a Behavior Management plan as an element of their personal parenting strategy.
| Session 4: "Mapping a plan"
The final session focuses returns to the big picture process of developing a personal parenting
strategy. In the session, the group as a whole will collectively develop a model strategy using the materials explored in
the previous three sessions. Beginning with the definition of success from Session 1, each element of success will be expanded
incorporating the biblical and psychological perspectives in the process. Families will be offered time to pursue specific
questions and special situations. At the conclusion of the session parents will be prepared to develop a complete parenting strategy which reflects their unique family values and situations.
